Historical
Venue Goes High Tech—From
Vaudeville to Praise Bands
The
Riverside Community Church in Peoria, IL has a colorful history.
It sits on a site which was originally home to a vaudeville
theater (complete with fly loft). When
that theater was destroyed by fire, a new structure was built to serve
as a shrine mosque. Today, that
building is the home of Riverside Community Church, a very progressive
congregation with a terrific sound system.
Ken
Musselman of Milam Audio, Inc. in Morton, IL, was called in to design
the new audio system. The primary objective was to reach each and every
one of the 1,500 seats in the sanctuary, but the system also had to
perform equally well for praise bands, concerts, and sermons.
The
challenge was finding equipment that would deliver dynamic sound for a
wide variety of applications. MacPherson
loudspeakers met the challenge. Musselman had heard a demo from
MacPherson dealer Spoiled By Technology, using only two Monoliths and
two MS18 subwoofers in a 2,400-seat theater.
He was impressed with the excellent coverage as well as the
sound.
Working
with a limited budget, equipment was chosen based on quality and price
as well as ability to do the job. It was a matter of getting "the
most bang for the buck." Musselman selected six Monolith
loudspeakers and two MD18 subwoofers, powered by QSC PL and PLX amps, a
dbx DriveRack System Processor, a Soundcraft K2-40 console, Lexicon
reverbs, PreSonus compressors, and a Clear-Com intercom system.
The project went well despite the fact that the room had always been a tough
one in terms of sound level and reverberance. Having done other projects in
the space, Musselman was aware of the challenges he faced. But the installation was smooth—as is the overall result. According to Musselman, the left-center-right configuration delivers sound that is
"very live, has plenty of get up and go, and at the same time, has a very smooth overall
sound quality. It sounds great. Everyone is pleased with the results."
The
Riverside audio system has been up and running since Summer, 2001.
